In Knowledge. Building Bridges. I rediscovered that Design is an iterative process allowing us to build bridges between silos of knowledge. That I am Living Lightly so I can live an exceptional life, deriving knowledge from experiencing my Universe and Illuminating magnificent change through Design.
In Work. Lightly. I discovered home and delight in my design work, a hyper-colour chiaroscuro of scandinavian clarity and unabashed girly glam. Design is my passion. The alignment of my skills, values and purpose. Design is my MÉTIER.
I AM A DESIGNER. I AM A CONNECTOR.
Design is the bridge. Design is communication. A way of creating a common language. It is valuable.
Until recently I was held back by my own definition of Design. I described my role as ‘designing integrated solutions’. I felt uncomfortable in my designer/client relationships as I wanted to connect and collaborate, but felt compelled to instruct and solve. This was a formidable barrier to overcome. I unconsciously believed that unless I could provide a solution, my work was not complete and of no value. I unconsciously wanted Certainty. Answers. Solutions. Labels. The very silos I was working to build bridges between.
I AM NOT SOLVING LIFE. I AM LIVING IT. THROUGH DESIGN.
It was not until I was able to truly inhabit Design as an iterative process, that I could surrender to the flow. I am discovering my authentic voice, creating my language, designing my Dreams into Action. As a designer I am embracing my role as an accomplice (I LOVE this word). I spark ideas. I facilitate communication. I translate ideas into visual language.
In five years of professional practice, I have worked on over one hundred projects; philosophical to practical, small to overwhelming in scale, all manner of clients, from every industry imaginable, international companies to sole-traders, to the honour of being invited to contribute to glorious personal events for friends and family.
When was I happiest, lost in the flow of creation? When I was designing new businesses and not-for-profit concepts into life. Turning the spark of an idea into something beautiful and real, which takes on a life of its own. When I work with kindred creative sprits, committed to causes I resonate with. A constellation of engaged entrepreneurs
I am passionate about creating a constellation of engaged entrepreneurs, collaborating as empowered individuals, as I believe these creative micro-businesses are igniting luminous, sustainable change in the world. Most importantly I am passionate about Luminaries Living Lightly, creating spectacular lives which nourish them on all levels.
Designing and living my own business, my MÉTIER, and now creating the world of LIVELIGHTLY, learning to create abundance through my passion, is one of the most incredible ways I have discovered to nourish myself. It is challenging. It is energising. It is spectacular.
Limiting Beliefs. Business. Money.
I shared some of the limiting beliefs I am identifying as I explore entrepreneurship. These beliefs centre around money and traditional concepts of business. I am learning that Design, and my work are valuable. That money is fluid, and only holds the power I ascribe. That fear creates resistance blocking the flow of money, creativity, inspiration and love. I am realising that so much of this stems from the ideas of language and disconnection that continue to emerge.
philosophy evolved into mathematics, religion, science, art, psychology and design. These fields of knowledge have… become adversaries. Science opposes the Humanities. Quantitative trumps Qualitative…The Left brain is superior to the Right. Masculine brawn, aggression and linear action supersedes feminine grace, nurturing and intuition… True wisdom is the seamless fusion of rationality and compassion. Yin and Yang. Masculine and Feminine… We create language barriers. We fight about words and definitions where we could be in dialogue, conversation, flow, creating meaning, beauty and unity.
Disconnected beliefs abound in relation to business and money. It is common to believe that business should be about success, power, professionalism, rationality, aggression, being conservative, risk, competition, protection of property and ideas. Business people are are encouraged to hide their feminine aspects, softness, grace, nurturing and intuition. It is okay to act ruthlessly, or outside of your values. It is just business.
This approach always felt so wrong to me.
What if business were beautiful?
Loving. Compassionate. Ethical. Generous. Sustainable. Not only financially. But personally, nourishing the individual on all levels. Nourishing our community. And our World?
What if I could design beautiful work and create value? Surrender to the flow of money, creativity, inspiration and love and as a result, create abundance in all aspects of my life.
What if I could be location independent? What if I could Dematerialise, replacing products with exceptional service, communication or digital innovations?
What if I not only loved my work, but could be a successful businessperson and still be 100% me? A passionate, rational, girly, silo-shaking sustainable change maker!
Isn’t business hard? And complicated?
Business is challenging. And complex. But it needn’t be hard or complicated.
I am passionate about Living Lightly, and Working Lightly, which means choosing to inhabit my most delightful self. And my most delightful self is not running around at a million miles an hour, investing excessive funds into my startup, saying yes to one hundred and one so-so projects, offering dozens of services and aiming to making one million dollars in my first year.
No. My most delightful self is creating a Luxurious Simple digital business, Living Lightly to create the financial freedom to work on projects I am truly passionate about, and grow my business slowly, and the space to nourish myself across all the spheres of my life DREAM. MIND. BODY. BEAUTY. LOVE. HOME. WORK. PLAY..
However, this took me years of business planning and two years of running my business to figure out. I have made so many mistakes. I’ve invested way too much time and money in the wrong areas. I’ve developed countless ideas, concepts and projects which didn’t pan out. I am sure I have read every small business blog, book, magazine and tweet written, and attended every symposium, lecture and webinar held. I have collaborated with incredible entrepreneurs as they developed their small businesses, making similar mistakes along the way. It seems that starting a business is as much about figuring out the logistics of starting a business as it is about figuring out the Who, What, Where, When, How and Why of YOUR business. Which is hard and complicated.
So I had this idea…
How about I make business Luxuriously Simple. I would create a system which allows Luminaries to focus their time and resources on developing their Beautiful Business, streamlining the logistical, technical boring bits.
Of course, as I had not yet identified my limiting beliefs about business at this stage, I set about not only creating a design solution, but THE design solution. A system so complex and intricate that it would translate any business idea into a complete Business Plan, Brand and Website at the click of a button. It would be professional, concise, conservative. I applied for grants to fund this ambitious project. And the more I developed it, and the more comprehensive and impressive it became, the less it felt like me. There was no magic. No beauty. No Love.
I returned to LIVELIGHTLY. I reconnected with me.
WHO I am (self-discovery). WHAT I believe (values). WHAT my dream feels like (vision). HOW I am going to ignite luminous change. And WHO I am connecting with. The result is something I could not be more excited to share with you. It is magic. It is beautiful. It is Love. But it’s also concrete, real, and I hope, incredibly valuable.
